My wife and I (Chris & Charmaine Kirby) have been keeping aquariums for the last fifteen years (we started with tropicals) around ten years ago we moved over to the dark side and started to keep Marine fish and corals. Six years later we had over 1000 gallons of seawater in our house and were supplying many local shops from our expanding frag farm, set-up in our two garages.
It was only a matter of time before we took the next step:
Cyber Aquatics opened on the 24th July 2004. The shop was built and stocked in only 13 days (there was a problem with the lease but we had announced our opening day already!). Since then we have expanded to employ two full time employees and taken on a new building bringing our floor space to over 2000 square feet.
Where our corals live.
Size:
We currently have 2 very large coral system at present:
The first (System 1) is 68 square feet (17 feet x 4 feet) of surface area that holds around 200+ corals and contains 900+ gallons of water.
The second (System 2) system is 84 square feet (28 feet by 3 feet) of surface area and holds around 300+ corals and conatins 1200 gallons of water Lighting:
System 1 is lit using natural sunlight (a 15 feet x 6 feet roof window above the coral tank) and three 400 watt 20k radium Metal Halides give supplemental light and make sure there is enough light when its cloudy outside (being in Newcastle this happens often)
System2 is lit using three 250watt 10K Metal Halides & two 150watt 10k Metal Halides.
Filtration:
System 1 is filtered using Live rock and two large commercial skimmers (Deltec & Shuran). We also us a ZeoVit reactor to keep the water quality perfect & also a large AquaMedic calcium reactor.
System 2 is filtered using Live rock and a large commercial skimmer (Aqua Medic). We also us a ZeoVit reactor to keep the water quality perfect & also a large Aqua Medic calcium reactor.
